FAUNA and FUNGHI of MALTA
(www.MaltaFauna.com)
Macronemurus appendiculatus  (Latreille, 1807)
Main synonym = Distoleon insidiosus    (Walker, 1853)
Taxonomical Classification:  Animalia / Arthropoda / Insecta / Neuroptera / Myrmeleontidae
Ant-lion, Doodle-bug (larva only)     Qerd in-nemel
Further Information:
Larvae construct characteristic funnel-shaped pits in sand and loose soil, lying in wait at the bottom. Ants which wander into the pit fall down the sloping walls and into the jaws of the antlion larva; if the ant does not fall immediately, the larva flicks sand particles at it until it does so. Pupates in the sand; adults resemble the unrelated damselflies somewhat - can be distinguished by clubbed antennae and differing wing venation. Adults are weak fliers, often nocturnal.
